Mirro mirror on the wall « WHO » is the most beautiful pumpkin of them all?
Have you seen Yayoi Kusama double exhibition at Victoria Miro Galleries?!! I was amazed, puzzled by her paintings and mirrored installations. The one that really made me experience a childlike wonder was All the Eternal Love I have for Pumpkins, 2016.
Now, before going any further you have to understand (If you don’t already know)… Yayoi has an obsession for repetition, pattern and infinity and for…pumpkins. This love for pumpkins stretches when she was a little child. After World War II, pumpkins were the principal food that she would eat. So when some of us see them as just big, fat vegetable… she describes them like human beings: “they have a warm feeling” “they make me feel happy” “they are my friends and I will always want to celebrate them in painting”
So here they are, humongous pumpkins in a cube box entirely mirrored from floor, walls and ceiling. Before your eyes millions and billions of yellow and black, vibrant, luminous. For 40 seconds, you are completely enveloped by infinity…and 40 seconds feels like 1.
This 87, yes 87!!!, this world-famous japanese artist has no rest and actually says “I am determined to live until I am 300 yo. Each day I create a new world by making my art”
